GEA Barr-Rosin is the leading supplier of dryers to the Starch Industry providing Flash Dryers for native starch production and 'P' Shaped Ring Dryers for modified starch production.

Starch is also converted to a number of other products, which are produced as dry powders such as Dextrose, Gelatinized Starch and Maltodextrin.

GEA Barr-Rosin provides Fluidized Bed dryers for Anhydrous Dextrose and Dextrose Monohydrate for food and pharmaceutical grades. Maltodextrin and Gelled Starches are dried on Spray Dryers and can be produced as agglomerated dustless products using a Fluidized Spray dryer.

Co-Products

During the manufacture of starch from corn a yield of about 61% is obtained as clean starch. The remaining material is made up of a number of co-products, which are a natural consequence of manufacturing starch, by the wet milling of corn. The majority of this material is used for animal feed production and so the area where these products are processed is often called the Feedhouse. These products are:

  1. Corn Gluten Feed (Feed) is a mixture of the fibrous exterior of the corn and concentrated Steepwater, which contains the soluble material after steeping. The steepwater is concentrated by evaporation and then mixed with the fiber before being dried to make Animal Feed. Other waste streams are often added to the feed.

  2. Corn Gluten Meal (Gluten) is the protein stream from the corn kernel and is typically 62% protein. It has a bright yellow color and is used as a high protein feed.
  3. Corn Germ is a particularly valuable co-product as it is usually the only stream from the Feedhouse, which is used for human food. After drying corn oil will be extracted from the Germ.

GEA Barr-Rosin dryers are extensively used for drying Feedhouse products. The dryers can be supplied as stand alone systems or combined with the steepwater evaporator for energy reduction and pollution control as an integrated process. Each dryer design has been selected to give the best combination of robust operation and optimum product quality. Systems are tailor made for each specific plant site. Extensive modeling of the process dynamics ensures process flexibility combined with best use of energy during process upsets.
